Poor Memory? Doodle!

sign.here-small.jpg

Its official - Doodling can make a boring presentation speech easier to memorise. (We like extreme doodling i.e. a Mind Map).

Do you switch off and daydream during conference calls?

Scribbling normally signifies boredom and a short attention span. Doodling, while listening to something boring, helps memory recall, according to research by Plymouth University, UK.

In the study, volunteers were given a doodling task while listening to a dull phone message – 29% were better

at remembering details than non-doodlers.

Ideas to remember music

iStock_000001273476Small[1].jpg

It has been really interesting over the past 12 months since I started to learn to play the guitar. I have asked many teachers and guitarists how the remember songs, chords, music etc and they just say ' by rote" or "never thought of it that way".

I have had to invent a few techniques (see http://www.fuzz2buzz.com/en/node/1499) and Mind Map many songs (see http://www.fuzz2buzz.com/en/node/84)

So I am on the hunt for your hints and tips on how to remember music.

Any thoughts, tips or ideas that we can share with others would be greatly appreciated!!

How to remember tones and semi tones in musical scales

music hand2.jpg

Here is a neat way to remember which notes have tones and semi-tones.

Write on your left hand the following notes

Thumb = A

First Finger = B C

Second Finger = D

Third Finger = E F

Fourth Finger = G

Then, imagine between each finger a Sharp or Flat.

I came up with this idea while trying to learn different bar cords on my guitar and it really works!

Do you have any hints or tips that will help remember music?

The old “Ribbon on the Suitcase” Trick!

You are standing there, watching the sea of black suitcases go around the luggage belt. Then suddenly you spot it.

Tied in a multitude of knots, around the handle, is THE yellow ribbon, signifying ‘my suitcase’. You instantly pick it up, knowing that you have the right bag.

Often it is just the way it is tied or located. It could be the type of ribbon or, in my case, one of my husband’s neckties, ceremoniously cut up. It is amazing how one little point of difference can stand out and instantly help you claim your luggage.

how to extend the basic peg systems

Once you have mastered the basic peg system of Number Rhyme for your short term memory lists. 1 = bun, 2 = shoe, you can easily extend the number of items remembered by associating an element with the images. . 1-9 as normal 10-19 same imagery but everything is in Ice (i.e. one = bun, in a block of ice) 20-29 – same imagery where everything is blue (2-blue) (i.e. one = a blue bun) 30-31 – same imagery with everything as velvet. (i.e. one = a bun resting in velvet) Etc

How do you remember stuff for the Microsoft Certified Engineer Exam???

This was a question posed at one of my recent workshops. . The simple answer is to use the SMASHIN SCOPE Memory Principles combined with the Loci method to put different key points in different parts of the room. . Sound all greek to you? Actually it is commonly called the Roman Room method. . Another key tip is to map out differnt scenarios/personas and work through each of the key issues in context of that organisation/person
