3RD SECRET: GO META ON THE MAGICAL BEAST!
As long as Mel is caught up in looping through from confusion to frustration, there is
very little that we teachers can do. Or is there?

Try this:

  1. Arrange a private space for Mel and your self.
  2. Invite Mel to join you in your virtual helicopter. Ensure that you set the copter to whisper mode.
  3. Rise up into the air, high enough so that Mel can see, hear and
feel what is occurring in the classroom. She can see herself in the
    event below.
  4. Ask her to run the tape of her last learning event – ask her to
describe what is happening below. Listen especially for what is
    happening between confusion and frustration.
  5. Land the helicopter and explain about Stimulus and Response and the Gap in between.
  6. Explain that each time Mel is confused and then decides to become frustrated she misses out on the learning.
  7. The ultimate secret is for Mel to catch herself in the gap BEFORE
she responds to consider what her options are. She could ask a
question; or Mind Map® what she knows already about the topic; discuss
with another student; listen to the teacher; etc.
