4TH SECRET: PERSISTENCE IS THE KEY
The process described in the 3rd secret was pretty simple, wasn’t it? The really challenging part for Mel though will be not to give up when there isn’t instantaneous success. In fact, this is where we as teachers and facilitators of learning really come into our own.
Explain to Mel that in the early stages it is very usual and very common for the person to catch themselves after they have responded in their habitual way to the stimulus, i.e. becoming frustrated. This is a marvelous happening that should be celebrated. It is the beginning of the change of behaviour. After all, the moment that Mel thinks about what has happened she has done something different and she can no longer be in the stuck state of frustration.
Encourage Mel to take as much time as she needs and affirm for her that it is perfectly normal to catch oneself after the event. Prepare her for that magical moment when she actually catches herself IN THE EVENT, in that gap between the stimulus and her chosen response. And if she has prepared for it, say by Mind Mapping some positive options, she will have toolbox of choices to trial.
Finally that truly beautiful time will come when Mel will catch herself BEFORE the stimulus, and she will have worked out how to empower herself before the learning event. Imagine her delightful anticipation of new learning experience?

5TH SECRET: TRY BEFORE YOU
15 June 2008 - 12:19pm — Will5TH SECRET: TRY BEFORE YOU BUY
To a large extent, the degree to which the teacher believes in the process set out in the 3rd Secret directly affects the level of the student’s belief in it. We know from the communications experts that most of the meaning of our communications with others is transmitted via non-verbal modalities. This means that unless we truly believe in the process, no amount of words will convince the student otherwise.
Why not trial the process on yourself? Be your own guinea pig! Take a behaviour that you would like to change. Try something as obvious as over-indulging on chocolate and see where it takes you.
The key to your success will be the 4th Secret,
that is, persistence. If you will agree to persist, I will agree to guarantee that the process works every time. Think what is at stake? You could begin to believe in your own untapped potential, could you not? If you did that it would be pretty obvious that all your students have the potential for brilliance. Then try the process in the 3rd secret with your frustrated students and see learning being reborn.
